The SPE Young Member Activities Vision

Since its inception in 2005, the Young Members Activities series has grown rapidly in size, global representation and importance, offering a business platform for experts, researchers and leaders of the oil and gas industry to network, recruit and share technical and industrial information with high school and university students. SPE continues to play an important role in spreading the word and educating students on the latest technologies and giving extraordinary examples from major companies within the Oil & Gas industry.

What is the SPE University Student Experience @GOTECH?

The SPE University Student Experience @GOTECH is designed to enhance students’ university experience by providing them with access to a range of resources, support, and opportunities.  They will have the opportunity to engage with a vibrant community of students and professionals from around the world.  They will have access to cutting-edge technology, interactive learning resources, and engaging sessions that will help them develop the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in your field.  We believe in empowering students to reach their full potential and we are dedicated to providing you with the tools and support you need to achieve your goals.

This year thanks to the generosity of Dragon Oil, SPE and Dragon Oil will be hosting the first University Programme alongside Gas & Oil Technology Showcase and Conference (GOTECH), entitled the SPE University Student Experience @GOTECH.   Keeping the mission, of making climate finance more affordable, and accessible, whilst heading to a net zero emission by 2050 in mind, the aim of the programme is to bring senior undergraduate students to Dubai to interact with GOTECH speakers, attendees and exhibitors, whilst also learning about the industry outside of the classroom.  The programme will also include sessions geared towards preparing students for life beyond university and incorporate plenty of activities and projects to ensure that students engage with one another, thus forming bonds that will last beyond the 3-day programme.  In general, accommodation, travel, and food & beverage during the programme will be arranged and provided.

Activities may include the following:

  • Professional Development Sessions, Ice-Breakers and Team Building activities
  • GOTECH Technical Sessions access
  • Field Trip
  • Team Project

Student Nomination Criteria

In general, the nominated students should be top-performing students – those who have shown excellence in leadership, participation in extracurricular activities as well as academic performance.  Students in their senior years of study (3rd or final year) tend to benefit more from this type of programme as they are about to enter the professional world. Our aim is to host students who excel in a variety of areas, not solely based on academic grading.  Diversity and inclusion are encouraged.

All nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Current SPE student member.
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate programme focused on geosciences and engineering.
  • Part of a qualified SPE Student Chapter from within the Middle East and North Africa Region.
  • Must not have participated in previous SPE University Programmes/Education Weeks.
  • Be within the top 40% of their class and be able to demonstrate this with documentation.
  • Be active with extra-curricular activities – for example, should have in the past or currently be involved with the SPE chapter or volunteer with another organization/club within the university.
  • Be in their senior years of study (3rd or final year).
  • Nominated by the Chapter Faculty Advisor and have received permission to be away from school for the duration of the programme.
  • Submission of a one-minute video demonstrating why they are the right candidate for this programme, and how the programme might benefit their career path. Be creative!
  • Students should also be aware of current sanction laws which may not allow them to participate in this event. Details of current laws can be found here: http://www.spe.org/about/laws.php

The goal will be to include approximately 60 students from around the Middle East and North Africa Region.  They will be in their senior undergraduate years, studying geosciences and/or engineering.  They should be in the top of their class and demonstrate involvement within their community and/or SPE.
