Process Safety Management continues to be one of the most significant management systems that the oil and gas industry uses for implementation of safe and reliable operations. Over the years not only have different process safety management systems and frameworks been developed but implementation has been scrutinised through the investigation of major incidents and accidents. One clear outcome has been the integral role of human error in many of these incidents, in both the prevention and escalation control. So, what has become quite evident is that Process Safety Management can only be effectively managed with human element management as well.
Deficiencies in human factors that are often ignored could have a significant contribution to lapses in occupational and process safety; therefore, attributing to safety process and procedural violations. If these shortcomings are not tested and verified at the workplace, risk of safety violations will become problematic.
This panel session will discuss the role of human factors in process safety and best practices for: (a) assessing safety risk, and (b) process of applying human error prevention and mitigation techniques to both occupational and process safety.

For a viable decarbonisation (net zero) progression, we’ll need collaboration between governments, companies, and consumers to fast-track a meaningful action. Regulating methane will help prevent methane emission/leakage throughout the oil and gas industry and protect the environment. Therefore, our industry must be supportive of the direct federal regulation of methane emissions from all the sources across the upstream, midstream, and downstream value chain.
Natural gas, increasingly decarbonised over time, has a pivotal role to play in getting to net zero. And tackling methane emissions is vital if gas is to play its fullest role in the energy transition. We need to tackle methane emissions fast, and regulations can help.
This panel session will discuss the pivotal role of natural gas (methane) decarbonisation over time in helping the oil and gas industry to achieve net zero and appropriate tracking of methane emissions which is of utmost importance if natural gas is to have a key role in the energy transition.

Since mid-2000 Artificial Intelligence has generated interesting solutions such as robotic automation, facial recognition, voice recognition, self-driving vehicles, language translation, etc. It has become a fascinating technology to many people throughout the world. What is called Artificial Intelligence today was also used by some scientists and engineers to solve physics related problems since early 1990s. In the past decades Artificial Intelligence has been used by a large number of operating companies, service companies, vendors, and academics to solve energy related problems.
It has been identified and mentioned by some scientists and engineers that there are mix applications of Artificial Intelligence to solve engineering related problems, specifically in the energy sector.
In this panel Session, we will be discussing and debating the correct and realistic version of Artificial Intelligence that must be used to solve engineering and specifically petroleum related problems which will contribute in the enhancement in petroleum engineering in the coming years. The main objective of this panel is the identification of the science of the Artificial Intelligence in engineering.

Oil and Gas Industry 4.0 has become the essential element of the energy industry that maximises the efficiency of operation while minimising the development and operational cost, and enhancing the safety of operation. The development of smart sensors with sophisticated hardware of varying sizes and functionality in-situ conditions can play a significant role in the Oil and Gas Industry 4.0 efforts. Although the development and deployment of smart sensors are important, the development of a data processing platform to convert raw data into meaningful information that complies with physics is essential.
This panel session will discuss the pivotal role of the next generation of smart sensors for surface and subsurface that are equipped with physics-informed learning algorithms. In addition, the pitfalls of relying on current learning algorithms that fail to provide physically meaningful solutions will also be discussed.

Hydrogen is an efficient energy carrier and due to its cleanness and high energy potential, it is one of the key contributors to the clean energy revolution that is taking place across the US and around the world. One of the key challenges for utilising hydrogen at industrial and commercial scales is its need for efficient and high-volume storage. Underground depleted geological resources can provide huge pore space for the safe storage of hydrogen in the absence of atmospheric oxygen.
The multiphysics-chemical and biological behaviour of hydrogen storage in depleted reservoirs is significantly different from traditional gas storage. It imposes scientific and technical challenges that need to be further understood. Multiple physical, geochemical, microbial, and abiotic reactions will take place when the hydrogen is injected into the underground, which will result in significant hydrogen loss or contamination of stored hydrogen.
This panel will discuss the technological and scientific challenge for screening and techno-economic evaluation of depleted reservoirs for hydrogen storage from the molecular level to the reservoir scale. The separation of impurities generated as a result of hydrogen interaction with subsurface materials will be discussed.
